2007.02 - Refurbishment of Thambalawewa -school in region Giritale Print E-mail

The pupils of primary school "De Bloemaert" in Tilburg have already supported our foundation before. See Project “ Exchange drawings schoolchildren”.
April 5, 2006, the school held a sponsored run. They donated the proceeds of this charity to our foundation. During the working visit by boardmembers in July 2007 we spent the proceeds of this sponsored run on the refurbishment of a school.
On July 12 we visited the new school Thambalawewa in the region Giritale. Through a mainstay of our foundation (a former school principal) we ended up here. It is clear that this school needs help. We make a tour through the school and take a good look around. We leave the school with new projects, thanks to school "The Bloemaert".
As you can see in the picture, the current toilets are horrible.
-    The school has just some old, rotten walls available. Very dirty for the children. Because the hygiene for the children has a high priority, we are going to build new toilets. Construction will begin in August 2007. Then we are going to make real toilet buildings, one for boys and one for girls.
-    Two tape recorders to support English education. Learn to speak English provides their chances later on in life for many children in Sri Lanka. Children who learned to speak English, have better opportunities. We would like to support this development by two tape recorders, which can record and play English texts and words.
-    New musical instruments. We would like to give children the opportunity to develop themselves musically. Making music together increases the solidarity and therefore good musical instruments are essential. In the capital of Colombo, we and the music teacher have chosen beautiful instruments. The school uses them gratefully. We bought some drums, a tabla (harmonica- piano), tambourines and more.
-    A camera. To give the school the opportunity to record the use of the equipment and also the construction of the toilets, we donate a camera to make photographs. With this we can always stay informed about the progress of the construction of the toilets. In addition, the camera can also be used for other school activities.
-    Cricket equipment. Cricket in Sri Lanka is like soccer in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, children regularly kick a ball. In Sri Lanka they play cricket, the national sport. The children of the Thambalawewa-school have no sports equipment. When we visit the school, they play cricket with wooden laths and poles. In late July we donated a complete equipment to the children, because we think that sports and physical activity is very important.

It is joyful  to participate in the upbringing and education of children, both with regard to reading, hygiene, language, music and sport. And again on behalf of children in the Netherlands.
In the following months we will build toilets. We also have realized  a school project “ Okki and Taptoe for a school”.
Sponsor: This project was made possible thanks to the support of Primary School "The Bloemaert" in Tilburg. Thanks to "The Bloemaert" we already could organize the project "Exchange Drawings' .
