50 girls aged from 3 to 20 years live in the girls’ orphanage in Hegurakgoda. It is very old and very poor. The girls haven’t got much colour in their lives and this sad shelter doesn’t really help. Almost all the girls sleep together in a large dormitory, they have no place for themselves. Specially for this group of vulnerable children we want to mean something. The girls’ orphanage needs a new roof quickly. The current roof is already 70 years old (very old for Sri Lankan standards) and leak like a sieve. This isn’t right because the girls sleep and live there and it becomes musty, dirty and unhygienic very fast. This obviously affects their health and fitness and also the performance at school. When we visited the orphanage in December, it showed indeed that there were many tiles badly damaged by the weather, falling coconuts and playing monkeys. An application has been made with the government for approval to replace the roof. That lasted very long, but fortunately there was an approval in March 2007 when we were back in the orphanage for girls. Everything was settled at once by the contractor and his work started on 26/03/2007 after Shehan transfered the money that morning . This time the roof was made of corrugated sheets. These are stronger and cheaper and therefore the best option. We hope for your support so that the 50 orphans who live there, get a decent sleeping place and then we can cheer them up a bit! The dormitory of the girls is also fitted with a new coat of paint. Text: Jip en Joske december 2006: Bosath Girls' Home, the orphanage in Giritale , where we have recently renewed a roof and built electricity , was our destination during our visit on Wednesday, July 4. After a trip of about 7 hours from Negombo to Giritale, we first went shopping. For the orphanage we bought a number of fans and treats: cakes and sweets (see also project "Dancing, singing and cake").
