On January 11, 2006 we were at family R in Welpalla, about 10 km from Lihiriyagama, for the first time. A very poor family with a mother and two children. Both children are registered as a sponsor child this year. Father has left the family and is in prison for abuse of the children. Mother suffers from rheumatism and eye disease, which is quite well under control by medication. It is difficult for her to make money and therefore they are dependent on donations from others. They often get food from the temple.
The house is in very poor condition and there is no running water, electricity and no decent toilet. Something has to be changde here definitely. We have encouraged the woman to plant coconut trees on her land. Within 5 years there will be coconuts that they can sell. The first trees are being planted.
The most important thing is that we have given her a sewing machine with which they can earn some money. So they are less dependent on donations from others. Her first job is to create masks for a local hospital (at 1 rupee each). Furthermore, we promised that we would build a decent toilet for her and the children. So we can improve the hygienic standard slightly.
