In the summer of 2007 we visited a school in Medirigiriya. The school was very remote. The inspector of education directed us to this particular school because he felt that help was desperately needed. We were received very formally. All children were sitting in a neat row. We were an attraction visiting this school, they never before had caucasian visitors. The school was well maintained, there was an enthusiastic and hard working team. The students earned their annual schooltrip by selling bananas from the school garden. During our conversation with the staff and some parents their request for help became very clear. Building a library was a great wish. Stimulating reading was considered very important. We could agree on realising a new library. In the summer of 2008 we were invited to open the new library. It was a nicely finished building, steel cupboards, reading tables and they even hung some curtains. Outside the building they placed the books on the floor, to be admired by alle the students and parents. All parents had bought a book to show their contribution. After the official opening they held a big party. Eating, singing, dancing and speeches. Everyone was very happy and grateful. Hanneke van Zon and her husband made it possible to build this library. They sought sponsors and walked all the way to Santiago di Compostela.
