A blind woman, mother of two children, locks the door of the house when the children go to school. After school the kids tell all the news and gossip that they have heard. If it is possible they take their mother to the street to meet other people. The area surrounding their house has changed. Now they have to cross a water to reach the street. Using two concrete pipes they carefully cross the stream to reach the stree. Especially for mother, but also for the children, it would be great if a bridge was made there. Initially the government did not allow us to build a fixed bridge, but only for a temporary facility. During our stay in Sri Lanka in the summer of 2008, however, we got news that permission has been given for a fixed bridge. The bridge is sponsored by the parish "De Bron" in Tilburg and is dedicated to Mr. L. Bijl, former dean of Tilburg and former chairman of our foundation. The bridge is symbolic of what he has been to many people in his life. 03.01.2009: This morning I went to the bridge on the bike. After a nice bike ride, we saw the bridge. A wonderful sight. The blind woman can now safely cross the bridge without help. Afterwards I went to the family for a visit. They were surprised when we arrived and immediately chairs were put up and tea was made. We had brought some fruit, so they had some extra food. Shama tried to talk in English, but soon returned to Singhale. She was very shy. Several pictures were shown, and after we took some pictures of them together on the bridge, we went home. Photos: Location: Negombo Tip: click on one of the pictures for a larger view. |
