On August 7, 2008 I visited Sister Kanthi in Kandy. We have known each other for quite a while. Before, she was mother superior of a girls’ home in Bolowallana. Now she takes care of a "welcome home" in which abused young women get help. It is still a growing problem in Sri Lanka. The sister said she often has to reject requests for placement. The Bishop of Kandy is now well advanced with preparations for building a second home, that will be built at the same area. The main concern for the sister is how to maintain the house and how to get enough money for living. The girls also have to be occupied. When they are bored, the atmosphere at home gets tensed. Together with the sister, we discuss some possibilities. She shows us a cover for a pillow with a beautiful butterfly. If she could receive Rs 1000 for such a cover and could sell them regularly, that would be a great solution.
We have placed an order for 50 pieces and hope that selling them in the Netherlands will be a success.
