This summer I went to visit Sr. Kanthi with my wife Karin and my daughters. During teatime we discussed the problems of the girls' centre. The sister has great problems in feeding the people properly. I asked her to explain the responsibilities of her convent and how their income was arranged. In short, the sisters are fully responsible for everything that happens in their centre. They literally have to suit themselves! Food for one person costs RS 55 a day. For thirty residents that would be € 4500. The sister receives only a fraction of that amount. Most homes regularly get meals from the neighbourhood. That is a good custom on an anniversary of a deceased family member. However, the girls' centre is in a very poor Muslim area, so the sister does not have to expect any gifts from the neighbourhood. On the contrary the most needy people come to her for help!
The choir members from TICGC, the gospelchoir in which Karin is singing, spontaneously collected money with which we could lighten a bit of the sister's daily load. We bought some sacks of rice and 10 foodvouchers which are exchangeable in a supermarket.
