During the summer of 2010 we visited the Montessorischool in Diyabeduma, which we have supported for several years now. It was the time of the schoolholidays and the teachers like to invite the children to school when they know we are coming. We asked them however to leave the children at home. After all they had their days off and we really wanted to have a good conversation with the teachers. We learned a lot about the situation from this meeting. The school can exist thanks to some small gifts from the neighbourhood and the help from some parents. The teachers only get a mimimum consideration from the parents and they do their good work mostly idealistically. Parents who can afford it send their children to a bigger Montessorischool in Giritale. These parents and children only come to see us when they know they can get something from us. Politicians from the neighbourhood make lots of promises, but they do not pay up. We admire the work of these teachers and we decide to arrange for a small monthly payment. We think it will make it possible for them to keep up to the good work for much longer, because we take away some of their daily worries about their household expenses.
