Sponsor a child

In our work we focus especially on children in homes. Before a child is placed into a home, many things have happened in a young life. Many children are orphaned or half orphaned by war or because a parent commited suicide. Many children are abandoned by their parents: father goes abroad to work for the big money and he never returns. The single mother is left alone with the responsibility to work and to support the children. It is almost impossible for her to provide for food, school uniforms, shoes, school materials and so on on her own. Out of sheer misery she is forced to temporarily place one or more of her children in a home. The homes are mostly led by monks or nurses. They take care of a good upbringing and education, so the children are taught well. Usually the children stay in a home until the age of 18, at which they have completed their schools.
In recent years we have increasingly sponsored children who still live at home. Through the school principle, the children are selected and supervised. In return, we help the school, for instance by building a library or improving the school. This method works very well.

By sponsoring a child you will help the child to grow up to maturity. If you sponsor a child, we would appreciate your intention of supporting him or her for a number of years.

The costs are € 90 per child per year. For € 90, - each year we can help families or homes to take care of that child, so he or she can go to school. We then provide for a uniform and school materials and we put an annual amount in a savings account specifically opened for that child. We sponsor the child until he or she has reached the age of 18 years or as long as he or she goes to school. Sometimes we also improve the living conditions of the child, because a house increases motivation and stimulates learning. Our condition in that case is that we as a foundation together with the parent(s) decide on spending the money and that we are sure that the child attends school. If that is not the case, the sponsorship stops.

Our field worker in Sri Lanka visits the homes, schools and families at least once a year. You, as a sponsor, will get the data from that child with a picture and we try to update that file every year. Sometimes it is possible to correspond with the sponsored child of family, but the children usually come from very poor families and they speak little or no English. We stimulate correspondence, but do not oblige it.

In March 2009 we sponsor 83 boys and 91 girls and also provide support for 8 children for English and computer classes.
