Tsunami December 26, 2004 Print E-mail

On December 26, 2004, Boxing Day, the South-East of Asia was hit by an unprecedented natural disaster. A very severe earthquake near Sumatra was the cause. The earthquake caused tidal waves in the Indian Ocean over one thousand kilometers in length. The tsunami reached speeds of more than 800 kilometers per hour. The tidal waves killed nearly 300,000 people in the region. In Sri Lanka, nearly 40,000 people died, particularly in the east and south-east region of the island. Immediately after the disaster our local field-workers began to help the tsunami victims in Sri Lanka.

Immediately after this immense disaster our assistance was put in motion. Friends of our field-workers in Sri Lanka transported truckloads of rice and clean drinking water to the affected areas.

Thanks to generous donations from individuals, governments and businesses, we were able to contribute to the reconstruction of Sri Lanka. Since December 26, 2004, we launched various projects and we have undertaken several actions. For more information please visit Project Page.

For all donations we say a sincere "Bohome Esthuti"! (Thanks!)
