Frans Schoots was born in 1942 in Tiel. After his secondary school education he studied medicine in Nijmegen. From 1977 to 1999 he worked as a general surgeon at the Academic Hospital St. Radboud in Nijmegen. Shortly after the tsunami he and his collegue Josca Verboven, with whom he had worked together for many years in the operating room, went to Sri Lanka to lend a helping hand. Through Josca he met Sjaak Berben, the founder of the foundation.
Frans's medical background comes in handy for several projects of the foundation. Through direct contacts with medical colleagues in Sri Lanka treatments can generally be performed much faster. Some examples: two cataract operations for the biological mother of an adopted daughter in the Netherlands, an orthopedic surgery of a partial crippled boy near Negombo and a lower leg prosthesis for an accident patient, who had his leg amputated. His motivation to go to Sri Lanka on a regular basis is mainly determined by the commitment and enthusiasm of the other volunteers whose cooperation makes staying in this country rather feel like a holiday than as a working visit.
