Visiting Sister Kanthi Print E-mail

Sister Khanti is a nun and she is working with the Foundation for many years now. Previously she was head of the "St Joseph's Girls Home" in Bolawalana. Sjaak visited this orphanage many times. Nowadays she leads a home for girls who have to leave their houses, for many reasons.
Last year, when Jan Heerkens and his family were in Sri Lanka, he also visited the sister. The roof of the house was leaking and the home was not looking very nive. The Foundation then told Sister Kanthi that she could have the roof repaired and that she could have the insite painted.

At the time of our visit, 11 girls are staying in the home. They sleep with 4 people in 1 bedroom. The rooms are so small that there not even a chair can be placed. The girls do a lot of mending.

The capacity of the home is limited. But Sister Khanti sometimes has to improvise. She is in need of an emergency shelter, but she doesn't have the resources for that. When we asked what she needed the most, she replied that she could really do with some folding beds. We all decided to help her, because we are certain that this money is well spent. Sister Kanthi was very happy with our support. Her fellow sister, with whom she runs the home, flew up, dressed up and directly went out to buy the beds.
Since capacity is so small, and many more places are needed, the intention is to buy another part of the building. The diocese has promised to do so.
In future I would really like to stay in touch with this sister. She is very modest and never asks anything for herself.
